Spreading words down the Westcoast…
Following my presentation 5 keys to Sustainable Living and Vitality in Midlife and Beyond at the Portland Better Living Show in March, April ushered me to Bellingham for a micro-workshop at Village Books. That bookstore is really wonderful; replete with the latest and best books of all kinds, a wide selection of music, friendly staff, all of which conveys the store’s passion for books and for generating a sense of community. |

Award Announcement and Spring Book Sale
Earlier this month, the US Independent Publishers Awards were announced and Audacious Aging won an award in its category. It is indeed a fabulous book with 40 authors, most of whom are celebrities such as Gloria Steinem, Andrew Weil, Ram Dass, Jean Huston, Patch Adams, Deepak Chopra, and many others. Back in 2007 I had the pleasure of initiating this anthology project with Joe Laur co-author of The Necessary Revolution. We wrote the foreword, Stephanie Marohn beautifully edited the book and Dawson Church and his team published it in March this year.

The Imperative of Wisdom in the Information Age
One of the reasons I instigated the Audacious Aging anthology was to further support among boomers and elders the desire to infuse our wisdom in our world. Given the predominance of technology in the Western world, we see that information is far more valued than wisdom. For one thing, information can be stored and disseminated at an increasing speed and that is very useful for us to function efficiently in many spheres of endeavor. But when we think about wisdom, we realize that it emerges and circulates very differently in contrast to information or data.
In Ram Dass’ chapter in Audacious Aging, we are reminded that although wisdom is undervalued compared with information, it serves a crucial function. To access wisdom we need to empty and quiet the mind, connect with the inner-knowing of the heart, and attune ourselves to the alchemy of reason and feeling. Furthermore, says Ram Dass, we must also be able to stand back and view the whole of our circumstances as we discern between what matters and what does not and weigh the depth and meaning of things. I agree; the process of reaching within for wisdom necessitates a shift away from speed and the kind of spin that our modern minds often get caught into.
As we grow our spiritual maturity, we elders will increasingly serve as sages and contributors of wisdom, the stuff our legacy is made of. While being also audacious we can help to restore a better balance in the appreciation and valuing of wisdom in relation to information. After all, as Deepak Chopra recently said, we used to think that it was up to the fittest to survive in the world, but now as we advance further into the 21st century survival will be achieved by the wisest among us.
Are you Spring-tuning your Mind?
By spring-tuning I simply mean to attune yourself to the new growth that is ready to emerge in you. As you may have heard, the process of realizing new levels of abundance and fulfillment includes a releasing or weeding out of limiting beliefs so that the good thoughts and intentions you plant won’t be crowed out.
As we become increasingly aware of the power of our minds, we must equally become more and more disciplined about what thoughts we allow to take up the “air space” in our minds. The more you live in a focused, conscious state in alignment with your heartfelt values and intentions, the more you will find that the laws of cause and effect work in an accelerated manner in your life. Hence the importance of being diligent and mindful of the thoughts you allow yourself to entertain. If you suddenly become aware that you are dwelling in worrisome thoughts, stop, acknowledge this and bring yourself back to a specific affirmation that can counter the downward spiraling that worry can cause. As well, you may choose to remind yourself of a positive outcome in your present or past when something you hoped for turned out to be even better than you had imagined.
By using a metaphor such as switching a radio or TV station you can refocus on something that helps you feel better. It’s also like turning on a light switch that makes shadowy thoughts scurry away as the brightness of light prevails. As you increase your capacity for returning your focus on desirable thoughts, you will begin to observe acceleration in your ability to manifest into form what you want in your field of experience. As new growth abound this time of year, ask yourself what new growth, new ability, new attitude or perhaps better quality of presence you intend to cultivate in yourself, or at work or in your relationships. And what obsolete beliefs or habitual thoughts would you need to release for that new growth to better flourish?
Book Coaching – Are you feeling the call?
Given the formal writing and publishing courses I have attended and the books I have initiated, authored and co-authored, I am regularly being approached by emerging writers seeking support to birth their book. If you are feeling the call to write or you’re in the early stages of doing so and would like support to sustain your momentum, to gain further clarity or to ensure you really do bring your project to completion, I invite you to contact me. In a phone conversation we can explore how coaching services could make a significant difference in your writing journey and success.
